research on the thriller genre
Lucas and I have done lots of research on the thriller genre but we wanted to focus specifically on the wilderness thriller sub genre to explore how isolation contracts suspense, which we tried to implicate in our movie through my research we identify that narrative structure in wilderness thriller often, place, the protagonist in a remote setting which immediately disrupts the peacefulness and establishes vulnerability to the protagonist by removing access to technology, communication and external support, the scene becomes more confined in increasing tension, and encouraging the audience to experience a scene of entrapment alongside the character.
one key convention I found is the use of mine en scene scene to portray nature as an antagonistic force elements such as low-key lighting, restricted visibility to strained color pallets and isolated framing reinforces, the protagonist vulnerability. The setting function is not merely as a backdrop, but as a narrative obstacle contributing to the plot to maintain suspense throughout the film, for example in the ritual, the forest is constructed through cinematography and sound design as almost sentient the use of wide shots shows how isolated they are in the setting in the vastness of the landscape all close-ups capture the characters, fear and distress because of this the contrast between white shots and close-ups that's the audience identify what the protagonist is feeling these kind of scenes.
Sound design also plays a big role in building tension. The use go non digenic sound such as suspenseful music in the background ir sudden sound effects which heightens the emotional intensity while genic sounds like branches, snapping or distant echoes, amplify realism, and uncertainty. Also, the use of silence further increases anxiety as it creates anticipation before moments of disruption editing techniques includes slow, pacing and lingering shots contributed through or buildup of suspense aligning with Todorovstheory of disruption and this equilibrium.
Overall, the wilderness thriller sub genre, constructs fear through isolation. Hostile mise en scene sound manipulation and restricted narrative. Dialogue these conventions, not only amplify suspense, but also create a psychological immersive experience for the audience.
